Virtual Production Possibilities

Updated: Mar 20, 2023

What is VP?

Virtual production (VP) is a rapidly emerging creative and technical process which is being increasingly embraced as a cost-effective means of producing content and telling stories for independent filmmakers/groups like Leaf Street. Beyond just being traditional green-screen, by integrating high-end 3D gaming technologies such as motion capture, virtual cameras, and real-time render engines with traditional filmmaking techniques, production teams can create entire scenes without having to build physical sets or hire hundreds of additional crew members. This opens up new possibilities for indie filmmakers like ourselves as we can introduce innovative styles and formats at drastically reduced budgets. In addition to the potential cost savings, VP lends itself to more efficient and accurate pre-visualization during pre-production periods enabling directors to plan out shots faster while maintaining a consistent look across all digital backdrops. While still in its early stages, the current advancements in VP technology hold the potential to revolutionise our approach to client projects and provide independent creators with powerful tools necessary to bring their stories vividly to life.

Fernhill

'In a town succumbed to the vicious rule of the Porter Gang, the people of 'Fernhill' must overcome their duelling identities to break free from a world defined by machismo conflict and redundant righteous violence.'

Using a combination of Mo-Sys tracking systems & Blackmagic Cameras, we were able to transform SODA's Green Screen Studio into a real-time rendered environment. Inspired by Disney's approach to virtual production, we used the integration of Unreal Engine and converted rendered worlds, usually reserved for video games, into our 3D virtual set.
